Chasing Fireweed: One of Alaska’s Most Loved Summer Traditions

If you’re local to Alaska, you already know—when the fireweed starts blooming, it’s the most beautiful (and bittersweet) reminder that summer is slowly winding down. Known to many as the countdown to fall, fireweed fields start making their debut around the last weekend of June, but don’t fully explode into color until mid to late July. And trust me, when it does? It’s magic.

Fireweed isn’t just a wildflower—it’s a full-blown event around here. People start planning day trips, picnics, and yes, photoshoots around these stunning purple-pink fields. And for good reason! It’s Alaska’s unofficial seasonal clock and a stunning backdrop that practically glows on camera.

As one of my insider clients, you’ve already gotten early access to book my most coveted fireweed dates and times. (Check your email—your booking link is in there!) These dates will fill up fast, because there’s just a small window to catch these wildflowers at their peak. Fireweed waits for no one!

One of my favorite fireweed locations is nestled in Palmer, and while I won’t spill the exact coordinates here (a girl’s gotta keep some secrets!), I do share it with my trusted clients. This spot offers easy access, panoramic mountain views, and is close to several of my other popular shoot locations—so we can sneak in a variety of stunning scenery during one session.

Now, let’s talk about something not everyone realizes: a lot of photographers keep their favorite spots a secret. It’s not just about exclusivity—it’s about preservation. Locations get overrun quickly, and sadly, some beautiful places have been damaged by overuse or careless visitors. That’s why I’m careful about who I share these hidden gems with—because I care deeply about protecting these wild places so we can all continue to enjoy them.

Another thing that separates a professional photographer from a weekend hobbyist? Permits. Yep—many of Alaska’s forest areas, state parks, and even local recreational areas require permits for commercial photography. I take the time (and invest the money) to make sure everything I do is above-board. That includes staying up to date on things like CPR certification—because yes, that’s often required just to apply for those permits!

Working with a pro in Alaska isn’t just about pretty pictures. It’s about safety, respect for the land, and creating a worry-free experience in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. So whether you’re dreaming of dreamy fireweed portraits, planning ahead for fall color, or just want to soak up the tail end of summer in the best way possible—I’ve got you.

Now go check that email, and grab one of those insider fireweed spots before they’re gone. 🌸
